Third annual System Administrator Appreciation Day

Friday July 24, 2009 in Tokyo

System Administrators' Group Launched
37 partner companies get together at the BSP event

System Administrator Appreciation Day was instituted in July 2000 by a system administrator in Chicago, USA, as a special day, comparable to Secretary Day, for system administrators. It has been celebrated on the last Friday of July in many different countries, and BSP started promoting the day in 2006.

Currently, there are millions of system administrators supporting IT infrastructures all over the world, including hundreds of thousands in Japan. To give them a boost, BSP established the System Administrators' Group this year. It is designed to promote wide-ranging activities to encourage administrators to do their job with vigor and enthusiasm and to contribute to their companies and to society. BSP aims to expand the group from a domestic assembly to a worldwide community involving system administrators all over the world.

Of the 41 participating companies, 37 representatives attended the event in person, showing their deep interest in the activities of system administrators.

In the opening speech of the event, Hiroki Takefuji, President and CEO of BSP, who set up the System Administrators' Group, told the audience, "I started this project because I thought perhaps we should thank all the workers in information system departments for their daily efforts for stable system operations, by celebrating the System Administrator Appreciation Day just like Mother's Day and Father's Day." He called for the cooperation of the audience, saying, "In this third celebration of the appreciation day, I would like to discuss here with all of you how we can improve administrators' work environment and what capabilities are needed for them, so that those who are having difficulty in finding their daily work challenging can find better motivation and purpose, and so that more young people will find the idea of becoming system administrators attractive."

Following the president's remarks, a keynote speech entitled "Work of system administration engineers—from open system to cloud computing" was delivered by Professor Yukio Namba of Advanced Institute of Industrial Technology. His spoke of the painful experiences he had in his early days as a system administrator, the continuous changes in technologies and legal regulations, the history of the technologies unit, the age of cloud computing, and the skills and knowledge that the new generation of system administrators will need in order to cope with current green IT technologies and BCP (business continuity plan).

After a break, some activities of System Administrators' Group were presented, the members of the promotion committee were introduced, and a ceremony to certify partner companies who have agreed to participate in the project was held.

Finally, Mr. Ikuo Ishige of Yamazaki Baking Co., Ltd, a member of the promotion committee, delivered a closing speech to end the highly successful event. Said he, "Information Technology has become an essential tool in the current society, and is becoming a vital part of the infrastructure just like electricity and water utilities. As it becomes more common, less appreciation is given to system administrators. When I was working as a system administrator in an early stage of computerization, the more useful we were able to make the system, the more appreciation we received, making us proud of our job. With a wish for today's system administrators to have the similar experience, I participated in this project. I would like to give my sincere support to the System Administrators' Group."
